Course it's be even more of a shame if I came all this way for nothing." "If it's my father you want I'm a poor substitution." Jeremy said. Pritchard rocked on his heels, thinking things over. "Maybe so. Your daddy has a damned fine reputation but a rare opponent is just about as good as a famous one. Can't say I've ever heard of anyone who fought the elusive Danvers Junior." "That doesn't mean no one ever has. It just means no one has returned to tell the tale." Jeremy said. He wasn't a fighter but he could act like it and hope that Pritchard got scared off. | |

"If that's true, fighting me will earn you nothing. So why bother with me? I suggest coming back when my father is here." Pritchard laughed again. "Nice try but you're not getting off that easily. I'm throwing down the towel." "You're giving up?" Jeremy asked. "I can't say I blame you." Pritchard growled quietly. "I'm challenging you." "Ah well. Pritchard stayed silent for a long time, trying to figure out what Jeremy was saying. Even when he did speak, he sounded hesitant. "I'm challenging you to a duel." "Right then. A duel. At dawn? Does that work for you? Pistols or rapiers? My swordsmanship is a bit rusty, but I could probably make due." Jeremy said. Once again Pritchard hesitated, his dull brain whirring. "I don't think you're taking this seriously." "No? Really? Perhaps that's because the situation itself is so ludicrous I find it impossible to take seriously." Jeremy stepped forward. "You're here because you want to challenge my father. At worse, you could die. But even at best, if you kill him, what have you gained? A better reputation as a fighter. What will that get you? "Yeah. So?" Pritchard asked. "It's stupid!" Jeremy said. "Can no one but me see that??" "That's how it works. That's how it's always worked. I'm on your territory so you have to kill me." Pritchard told him. "That may be the practice but it's not the law." Jeremy said. Pritchard laughed once again. "Damn boy. You're as yellow as they say." Jeremy's cheek twitched and Pritchard tensed, thinking he finally got Jeremy to fight. But Jeremy turned and walked toward the house. He didn't look at the mutt as he said, "you think about what I said. I'll give you an hour to get off my territory. Then I'm coming after you." "Whoo-hoo I'm scared now!" Pritchard called after Jeremy as he went into the house and shut the door. Pritchard stayed there for a minute or two then stormed back to his car. | |
