Jake drifted to sleep as well, unable to stay awake any longer. While asleep, he had a dream- or more of a nightmare. But it had been real once upon a time. He was attempting to drag a deer into the garage that he had shot earlier that day. "What the f*** are you doing?" The words made Jake freeze. He slowly turned to see his father standing by the house, in his hand was a bottle of cheap scotch. "You" Jake stalled. He swallowed, tried again to speak. "Do you want dinner?" "What did I tell ya about going out in those there woods?" his dad growled, walking toward Jake. There was a slight stagger in his step that seemed to always be there now, whether he was drunk or near-sober. "Huh? What'd I tell you, boy?" Jake dropped the deer onto the grass and tried to decide whether to run for the woods or the house. But his dad was already there, shoving him against a nearby tree. Jake felt the rough bark against his cheek and then, with another push, his nose was slammed up against it. He felt wet against his lip, tasted blood, and then he heard a loud crack of his nose being broken. "Don't I look after you?" his dad was asked. "Provide for you? Make sure you have enough to eat?" "Yeah," Jake lied. He had to say it, or he would be in real trouble. "'m sorry. I just thought--" "Stop f***ing thinking," his dad snarled. He shoved him into the tree again, and again, and again. Jake tasted more blood until that was the only thing in his mouth. He had to spit just to keep from choking. His fathers hand was on his neck and his fingers reached all the way around until he wasn't choking from the blood, he was choking from the pressure. "Stop it," Jake tried to beg, but it came out as a gasp. His dad wouldn't, couldn't, kill him. He would stop, would let him go- right? Then, as suddenly as the feel of the tree on his face, Jake was slammed against dirt. He gasped for breath. But he didn't get a chance to relax. Suddenly, he heard the sound of a branch being snapped and then he felt the horrific pain of the wood connecting with his back. He couldn't even get the words out to beg for him to stop. Everything was just pain. Jake woke with a start. His hand reached up and gingerly touched his nose, glad to find it not broken anymore. There was just a slight bend in it which had been caused by that day. -- "What?" Steve asked. | |
